Level 4 English prepares students for more specific use of the English language according to the technical and professional requirements of early career IT jobs.

Focus is placed on being able to evaluate information critically and communicate through different types of texts, as required by various but often specific technical and theoretical contexts. The writing of action, feasibility and specification reports of a technical nature will conclude this unit.

In delivering Level 4 English, emphasis is placed on the processes needed for learners to transition from use of the English language in General Education to that required for access to Higher Education. In particular, L4 Key Skills English is targeted at learners who have successfully completed their Foundation College education (Levels 1 to 3) and seek to further their studies at Technical or Degree level.

In this respect, this unit recognises the necessity to meet two linguistic demands at this threshold level:

i. strengthening students’ linguistic competences to be able to communicate more specifically within their vocational area/stream and

ii. to prepare them for more rigorous academic thinking, research and writing as necessitated by degree level courses.
